Hi guys Brought a ay50 LC 2001 model Got it running nice, plug colour is spot on and starts and rides fine. The issue is it will not go over 30mph As far as I know with these this model has a restricted cdi, and variator is smaller than other peds with the same engine such as the sr50. I only want to get about 40 out of it, got derestricted standard exhaust, and variator washer has been removed. My question is this, should I change the variator for an sr50 one , will this give a bit of extra speed, or do I have to change the cdi to an unrestricted one to achieve this. Like I said only want to be able to hit 40mph. If the variator route will an sr50 variator make a difference has anyone else done this. Don't want to change the cdi if I don't have to. Please help Thanks
You might want to take a look at this: http://www.scootershack.co.uk/threa...-ill-never-know-katana-ay50wrw-project.30879/ It is one i've just done. Had similar issues but sorted most of them. The cdi is not restricted at all, you need to change the main and pilot jets if you want to keep the standard carb and airbox, or else upgrade to the malossi 19mm carb and manifold conversion with an open filter, but you will still have to play with the jetting somewhat. This one of mine will do a steady 37, takes off like a rocket and leaves most other scoots behind upto about 33-35mph. You must make sure you have the right belt on, dont make the mistake I made; it should be 16.5mm wide and no more. Too thick and it wont reach the bottom of the rear pulley and gain top speed. Also make sure it is reaching the top of the front pulley. If not then the rollers are too heavy.
